Historical Chengdu

There is timelessness to Chengdu, a sensation of being rooted in the past while experiencing the present and looking to the future. It was around 900 years ago when Marco Polo first arrived in Chengdu, and his accounts recall a spectacular place. “Its capital is a magnificent city, just like its name,” he wrote.

The city of Chengdu has experienced 2,300 years of changes, be its culture, history, art, nature, cuisine, or customs. The language, legends, sceneries, mysteries, rich heritage and customs are all valuable treasures and engaging explorations.

Both the city center and suburban areas of Chengdu contain many famous scenic locations which record historical change and preserve cultural heritage. Much of the culture and heritage of Chengdu can be found within the walls of the city’s museums, libraries, theaters and art galleries, which give insight into the history and spirit of the generations who have called the city their home.

Among the city’s libraries, the Library of the Chengdu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, built in 2010, stands out for its adherence to national standards. With an initial collection of 150,000 volumes, it is one of the largest in Chengdu. Dance and drama play out in more than 40 theaters across the city, while a varied selection of fine art is easily accessible through its scores of galleries.

Chengdu is a city replete with tourist attractions, in particular national level scenic spots, forest parks, nature preserves and geoparks, as well as historical and cultural cities and towns. Top locations include {Mount Qingcheng} and the

{Jinsha Site Museum}
The archaeological site of Jinsha was only recently discovered after being buried for almost 3,000 years. During the excavation, invaluable literature and documents revealing details that had not been recorded before until now were discovered. Before then, the recorded history of Chengdu’s development began in the late Three Kingdoms period. However, the discovery of the Jinsha site called for a complete revision of the ancient history of Chengdu and Sichuan, which was written during the Shu civilization nearly 3,000 years ago.

The thousands of rare relics that were unearthed from the Jinsha site could be traced back to the late Shang dynasty, including more than 30 pieces of gold wares. One item in particular was a thin piece of gold foil of only 0.02cmsin thickness and weighing just 20g. Within the hollow pattern, there were 12 beams representing the recycled 12 months of the year and four birds flying around the sun representing the four seasons.  This was named the "Golden Sun Bird" and it showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the ancient Shu and demonstrates their worship of the sun and birds. In amongst all the relics from the Sheng and Zhou dynasties, the "Golden Sun Bird" has become the symbol of Chinese cultural heritage.

Other relics that were discovered at the Jinsha site include the “colored wooden head figure” that remains immortal for 3,000 years, hundreds of ivory tusks, more than 40 ivory pieces and around 400 pieces of jade objects. The largest of the jade objects was a 22cm Jade Cong, which was exactly the same as the one found in the Liangzhu culture. The design, with its intricate pattern of micro-thin hair engraving was extraordinary. There were also 400 pieces of copper ware including a standing copper statue that is almost identical in style to the Sanxingdui bronze statue. There were a large number of pottery, stoneware and wooden plows.

According to the studies of archaeologists, Jinsha was a political, economic and cultural center that was built after the fall of the Sanxingdui civilization. It was the capital of ancient Shu from the late Shang dynasty to the period of Western Zhou dynasty. This is further evidence that many ancient Chinese civilizations were also cultivated from the areas around the vast Yangtze River Basin.

{Wu-Hou Shrine Museum}
Wu-Hou Shrine Museum is a memorial built in the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316 AD) to honor the famed military strategist Zhuge Liang. It remains as one of the signatures of Chengdu culture, as well as the Three Kingdoms period. It was later also used to memorialize Liu Bei, a military general, one of the few temples in China that honors a monarch and his subjects. The shrine is surrounded by cypress trees, and inside it exhibits literary works, calligraphy and carvings. Its history lies in its unique architecture, ancient trees and beautiful garden.

{Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum}
Chengdu is also known as a poetic city. At Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum, located by the Huanhuaxi River, was the house of the famous poet Du Fu from the Tang Dynasty, one can pay homage to the spirit of the great poet. His poem “My Cottage Unroofed by Autumn Gales” is considered a masterpiece.

Qing-Yang Palace
Qing-Yang Palace

The Qing-Yang Palace was the first Taoist Temple established in western Sichuan from the Tang Dynasty. To celebrate the birthday of philosopher Laozi, a fair is held in the Chengdu Wen-Hua Park just next to Qing-Yang Palace.

{Jinli Ancient Street}
Jinli is one of the oldest and most commercial streets in the area’s history. This street, stretching just 350 meters, gathers the spirit of Chengdu with teahouses, inns, restaurants, bars, theaters, handicraft stores, local snack vendors, specialty shops, as well as the customs of the Sichuan people.

{Wen-Shu Temple}
Wen-Shu Temple is a renowned Buddhist temple. It was built during the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1697), and his calligraphy can still be seen in the temple today. The Wenshu Tearoom is a place where you can enjoy traditional Sichuan tea with their unique utensils, while listening to the folk artists’ playing and singing.

{Chengdu Wangjianglou Park}
It is said that the poetess Xue Tao from the Tang Dynasty had used water from the well at Wangjianglou Park to sign her poems. The most beautiful construction there is the 39-meter-tall Wangjianglou, a pagoda where the ceiling of every floor is decorated with fine carvings of animals and figures. The top of the building is gilded in gold and shines under the sun. The garden surrounding the pagoda is filled with various types of bamboo flanked by a serene lake.

{Kuan-Zhai Alley}
Kuan (meaning “wide”), Zhai (“narrow”) and Jing (“well”) are old alleyways that have come to represent the culture, lifestyle and history of Chengdu. Each has a different personality: Kuan Alley is considered the nostalgic one; Zhai Alley has a relaxed atmosphere, while Jing Alley represents newness and dynamism.

Chengdu is a living city with vibrant local life. Visitors can watch Sichuanese opera's face changers, stroll down the Kuan-Zhai Alley, check out the Chengdu Wangjianglou Park or Hejiang Pavilion, or just wander down any alleyway for a taste of Chengdu's unique tea culture or spicy noodle houses.
